The smash west end hit “Kinky Boots”, landed at the glorious, Wales Millennium Centre last night and what a landing it was! We were taken on a journey of heartache, passion, sheer determination, with lots of high wrenching sass, thrown in!

PRICE & SONS LTD SHOE FACTORY

Kinky Boots tells the story, of Northampton based shoe factory (Price & Sons Ltd), coming into financial hardship and how the factory is considering closing, due to this. Then like a force of nature, “Lola”, played by the outrageously talented, “Kayi Ushe”, makes an electric appearance, at a London based drag bar and forms, an unlikely friendship, with the owner of Price & Sons ltd’s, owner, “Charlie”, after he accidentally, becomes involved, in a street fight. “Lola” then proposes a very unusual, change of workmanship, at the factory, to save it from closure, which certainly intrigued “Charlie” and eventually leads them all, to the fashion capital of the world, Milan.

JOEL HARPER-JACKSON AS CHARLIE PRICE

Playing the role of conservative factory owner “Charlie” is the very talented, “Joel Harper-Jackson”, who was just superb. Joel really engaged with his character and may we add, has a beautiful voice and his rendition of “Soul of a Man”, was very moving and powerful.

KAYI USHE AS LOLA

The fabulous “Kayi Ushe”, really delivered a sensational performance and was perfect, to play the diva, that is “lola”. “Ushe”, has this almighty stage presence, that really was of superstar quality. If they were to ever remake the film, then he would be a perfect “Lola”, for the movie too, in our opinion. “Lola” was never accepted, for being different, by his father and it becomes clear, throughout the production, that he struggles with that, but has learned to deal with it, through his artistic persona. Ushe’s rendition of “Hold Me in Your Heart”, was very special and we’re sure, very relatable for many people, as the lyrics talk about acceptance issues and heartache, from prejudice. “Ushe” certainly left, a beautiful lasting impression, on us.

CAST OF KINKY BOOTS THE MUSICAL UK TOUR

The costumes were outrageously glamorous and due to us being in the front row, we could really appreciate, the time and effort, put in to the cast wardrobe, by the costume team. We really applaud them, for that. We also have to mention, the fantastic arrangement of music, in this production, written by the iconic, Cyndi Lauper. The lyrics have been, expertly thought out and not just girls, wanted to have fun, in this electrifying production. Lola’s backing dancers, “The Angels”, were sensational and danced their socks off, all evening, paired with their fabulous costumes and catwalk modelling, they were outstanding.

Playing the role of “Lauren”, is coronation street star, “Paula Lane”, who was brilliant. Her witty persona and soul lifting dance moves, really made her character, truly loveable. “Lane” has a great cheekiness about her, also, which really made her personality, stand out from the crowd. A much needed character, in any production.

This heart warming story, really displays, how people from all walks of life, can really come together, to help each other, in times of need. This is especially shown, with the change of heart, from “Mans Man”, “Don”, played by “Demitri Lampra”, who’s biggist views, soon change, after working with “Lola” and appreciating, her passion to save the factory, he worked at, for many years.

The show represents unity and inclusion and we believe, that’s why its such a raving success, also. We felt like we had been to a fantastic party and much needed night out! We are thrilled to announce, we have awarded, Kinky Boots UK, one of our 7 star reviews. This is very well deserved, due to it being a such a fantastic production and really ticking all the the right boxes for us, in terms of west end productions.

So finally in the words of “Oscar Wilde” and “Lola”, be yourself, as everyone else, is already taken!

You can see this hair raising show, for yourself, at the Wales Millennium Centre, until Saturday, 3 August, 2019.
