PURPLE POPPADOM

07/03/2019

Set on Cowbridge road east is the fetching Purple Poppadom Indian restaurant. The restaurant had a lovely airy feel to it and the decor was very contemporary. Upon arrival, we were greeted straight away and quickly shown to our seats and offered drinks. Carl Marsh and I  asked the waiter for his recommendations.

He was knowledgeable and explained the different curry offerings and spice intensity. We opted for a traditional ‘SHEEKH KEBAB’ and ‘PRAWN PORICHATHU’ to start. The sheekh kebab had delicate fragrant spices and  a lovely smooth texture. The prawn porichathu were expertly cooked and had subtle notes of Kashmiri chilli and garlic. They were delicious.

For the main course we had ‘LAMB ROGAN JOSH’, ‘MURGH LABABDAR’, ‘SAFFRON PILAV RICE’ and ‘CHILLI & CORIANDER NAAN’. The lamb in the rogan josh was slow cooked and  extremely tender and was accompanied by a sauce that  had a beautiful texture and taste to it, incorporating authentic Indian spices and herbs like saffron and fennel seeds. The murgh lababdar is a curry from the northern India region, with tandoori chicken tikka, spiced onion in a tomato sauce. It was extremely rich and paired beautifully with the fluffy saffron pilav rice and chilli & coriander naan bread. The naan bread was extremely tasty and soft with subtle notes of garlic and coriander which really paired well with the whole meal.

For desert, I opted for the ‘TANDOORI PINEAPPLE’ which was served with pistachio ice cream. The pineapple was quickly seared for a vivid flavour and was extremely refreshing. The desert was a perfect way to end the meal as it really satisfied my need for a sweet finish.

The general manager Raman and his team were really attentive and ensured our whole experience was pleasurable, even though the restaurant was extremely busy. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for heartwarming Indian cuisine that is a great value for money.
